Developing a narrative: I go to visit a family member in a cemetery and i encounter strange goings

Storyboard

Vladimir propp had a theory about character profile , he believes that there is seven characters in the 100 tales he analysed
1, the villain
2, the donor
3, the helper
4, the princess
5, the false hero
6, the dispatcher
7, the hero.

Binery opposites
In critical theory, a binary opposition (also binary system) is a pair of related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning. Binary opposition is the system by which, in language and thought, two theoretical opposites are strictly defined and set off against one another.[1] It is the contrast between two mutually exclusive terms, such as on and off, up and down, left and right.[2] Binary opposition is an important concept of structuralism, which sees such distinctions as fundamental to all language and thought.[2] In structuralism, a binary opposition is seen as a fundamental organizer of human philosophy, culture, and language.

Binary opposition originated in Saussurean structuralist theory.[3] According to Ferdinand de Saussure, the binary opposition is the means by which the units of language have value or meaning; each unit is defined in reciprocal determination with another term, as in binary code. It is not a contradictory relation but, a structural, complementary one.[3] Saussure demonstrated that a sign's meaning is derived from its context (syntagmatic dimension) and the group (paradigm) to which it belongs.[4] An example of this is that one cannot conceive of 'good' if we do not understand 'evil'.[5] In post-structuralism, it is seen as one of several influential characteristics or tendencies of Western and Western-derived thought,[citation needed] and that typically, one of the two opposites assumes a role of dominance over the other. The categorization of binary oppositions is "often value-laden and ethnocentric", with an illusory order and superficial meaning.[6] Furthermore, Pieter Fourie discovers that binary oppositions have a deeper or second level of binaries that help to reinforce meaning, for example : Hero and Villain involve secondary binaries: good/bad, handsome/ugly, liked/disliked, and so on.

Film opening production evaluation

I originally planned to work in a group however due to disagreements in ideas for the film opening and the lack of work at the time was also a major issue as i wanted to finish my production quickly
I came up with the idea for my own film opening, however my idea needed developing and I got help from other colleagues. But I constructed how I wanted the scenes to be and I also filmed the establishing shot of my opening and I am editing the whole film opening myself so I am contributing to a lot of the planning and production of the opening scene.

My original ideas

My original idea was that i woould be in school, i get bullied by these two boys in my year and i ended up getting chased and torrorised around the school by these two bullies, the bullies put on masks to make me scared and as a result I decide I want to get revenge on the two boys.

I then had nother idea which was that there would be a Stalker and no one would believe that there was a Stalker and they would eventually encounter this Stalker but it would be too late as this mysterious staalker ends up killing victims.

Evaluation

Evaluation

My film opening uses the typical eerie sound effects and a build up in suspense as a way of distinguishing what type of genre my film opening is, the opening is a horror film opening as the use of sound and heavy breathing is used to try to shock and scare the audience. my horror film opening don't rely on the typical conventions to scare the audience such as killings, jump scares.my film opening represents ethnicity particularly black people as  normally black characters are seen as side characters or the ones that are killed off first. however my film opening challenges that stereotype as the main character is black and he doesn't get killed off straight away, so this would attract a black audience to watch my horror film. my horror film opening is a psychological horror and it has the themesand conventions of a psychological horror such as a discrete figure used in my film opening but this was used to confuse and scare the audience as they would be curious as to what is behind the bush, and i leave the film opening on a cliffhanger, this also makeas the audience know what happens next.

For my film opening I decided to use Columbia pictures industries as my institute as they are one of the most successful institutes in media and more specifically film which means they coiuld be able to develop and finance my film better than other institutions, and they have produced a number of successful horror films such as 13 ghosts, i still still know what you done last Sunday, and 30 days of night. so i thought using an institution that has got a good reputation for producing good  horror films would benifit me a great deal, that is why Columbia pictures were chosen.

The Primary target audience for my film opening would be black teenagers, as the main character is black and he is a teenager this challenges the typical stereotype of a black character as they are normally killed off first or they play a sidekick to the main character , however the film opening still attracts normal teenagers and some adults as the would have relatives buried in the cemetery, they are all the secondary target audience as they are people who are potentially interested in the film and could easily be linked to them but are not the specific group of people the distributors are targeting this is good as it widens the range of audience .I attracted my audience by using a different setting to my horror film opening as the audience were intrigued by watching a film opening set in a cemetery, the different range of shots also attracted the audience and that's what I considered when producing my film opening, and my results from the audience reaction results suggest that the range of shots and lack of dialogue is what makes the film opening good, those were key things that attracted the audience.

I have learnt how to use a digital camera, as when I was doing Gcse  I had only experienced using analogue cameras, and i've noticed that  digital cameras has better quality and the clips are sharper and it's easier to carry around a digital camera this improved the quality of my work as my film shots were a lot clearer and i am able to film more types of shots using a digital camera than when you use an analogue camera .what I learnt is that for my preliminary task is very simple as it required no real use of montage, and it didnt require a sequence it was just walking into a classroom whilst filming at a 180 degree angle, however for the main task it was a lot more challenging as I needed to film more shots and it also needed to be shots which makes sense but varied at the same time, and in the final task i had to be a lot more aware about location sound, lighting and a sense of a storyline.

The dark knight

The dark knight has an intense style of music at the start of the movie, the music indicates that thee antagonist of the movie will be introduced to the plot and as expected later on in the movie opening you see the main antagonist. From the opening I can denote that the dark knight is an action movie because you can see a lot of shooting and fighting just from watching the first few minutes of the movie, the intense music and use of so much actions sets us the idea that the movie will be intense and full of action. when the movie first starts you see the usage of high key lighting this is so the action stands out more. but then the lighting changes into low key lighting as the movie settles. the low key lighting is used to show that batman's introduction to the movie is low key it refers to the film title the dark knight, he's a hero that has evil ways about him. There was a lot of dialogue within the opening of the dark knight.

scream

the film opening starts with a scream at the beginning, this links to the title of the film. scream is a parody of horror movies in general, it contains the basic genre's such as the ditzy blonde haired girl, the scary house, the sharp knife, and the scary voice, they use the popcorn being made as an indicator that something bad is going to happen. the opening scene is set in an house this is another key common convention in a horror movie . the sound changes when the main character discovers that she is being suspiciously watched. her facial expression and body language corresponds with the opening scene, she is calm , happy and slightly flirtatious in the beginning, however she starts to becoming worried and paranoid.

Types of horror films

Slasher horrors -A slasher film is a subgenre of horror film, and at times thriller, typically involving a mysterious, generally psychopathic killer stalking and killing a sequence of victims usually in a graphically violent manner, often with a cutting tool such as a knife, a machete, an axe, or a chainsaw. Although the term "slasher" may be used as a generic term for any horror movie involving graphic acts of murder, the slasher as a genre has its own set of characteristics which set it apart from related genres like the splatter film.
example of a slasher horror- A Nightmare on Elm Street

Psychological horrors

Psychological horror aims to create discomfort by exposing common or universal psychological and emotional vulnerabilities and fears, such as the shadowy parts of the human psyche that most people repress or deny referred to in Jungian psychology as the archetypal shadow characteristics: suspicion, distrust, self-doubt and paranoia of others, themselves and the world. Thus, elements of psychological horror focus on mental conflict. These become important as the characters face perverse situations, often involving the supernatural, immorality and conspiracies. While other horror media emphasize fantastical situations such as attacks by monsters, psychological horror tends to keep the monsters hidden and to involve situations more grounded in artistic realism.
Plot twists are an often used device. Characters commonly face internal battles with subconscious desires such as romantic lust and the desire for petty revenge. In contrast, splatter fiction focuses on bizarre, alien evil to which the average viewer cannot easily relate.

Example of Psychological horror film is The Black Cat

Survival horrors

Survival horror is a subgenre video games inspired by horror fiction that focuses on survival of the character and trying to scare the players. Although combat can be a part of the gameplay, the player is made to feel less powerful than in typical action games, because of limited ammunition, health, speed, or other limitations. The player is also challenged to find items that unlock the path to new areas, and solve puzzles at certain locations. Games make use of strong horror themes, and the player is often challenged to navigate dark maze-like environments, and react to unexpected attacks from enemies
example of a survival horror film is Resident evil

Preliminery task

The 180 degree rule is a basic guideline regarding the onscreen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene. An imaginary line called the axis connects the characters and by keeping the camera on one side of the axis for every shot in the scene. The first character will always be frame right of the second character, who is always frame left of the first.

Match on action is a technique of filming used in many sorts of films, it consists of connecting 2 shots together in which a character finishes of an action in the second shot that was started in the first one, for example walking through a door in which he opens the door being filmed from behind then the clip cuts to him walking through from the other one.
